It is not an exaggeration to say that it has been an extremely long time since I last posted about my internship. I feel so neglectful of my tumblr and of this process. Although my memory may be slightly hazy and since my internship is on the brink of being finished, I guess it’s time to get all caught up.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 5TH
Since Pam is on vacation, I checked in to see if the ladies needed me in the office today. With not much work to do, they asked me in around 1:00 p.m. to stuff the four proof books. So of course, I came in and stuffed the books in record timing, and had a great chat with Meghan about the life of the actor, which she is so enamored with. A quick day in the office, but eventful and enjoyable, nonetheless.
MONDAY, AUGUST 8TH
The beginning of the week is always rough. Although I don’t start my internship work until 11:30 a.m., I’m still up around 7:00 a.m., carpooling and getting in work at my usual job. So yes, Mondays are still quite rough. Anyway… I arrive at the office and get started with the internship letters for the local colleges and universities. I continue compiling a list of contact information for all of the area institutions and making revisions to the already drafted letters. After a bit of work on that project, I went to Pam to ask her for my next project. Oooh, an organizing project. Woo! Why do I get so excited? It beats me… but I love organizing. She wanted me to put together 4 binders for their regular sales meetings. Unfortunately, the supply closet was lacking on supplies so I was sent down to Staples with a company credit card in hand. It took about 40 minutes to locate everything, as Staples was turned up-side-down from Back to School sales. With a five minute drive back up the road, I sat down and got started putting binders together with pocket folders and printed labeled dividers…. Okay. I’ll stop there. This little binder/organizing project took me the rest of the day, what with figuring out the stack bypass on the huge printer and getting the template to line up correctly with the dividers. What a day!
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10TH
As I strolled into the office I found a note on my desk from Pam – instructions on a new project. A stack of business cards accompanied the note and it was clear that I was to put together a spreadsheet of all of the new contacts. Luckily, I’m a certified professional Excel spreadsheet maker, so it all worked out. After that, I briefly touched up the Internship letters. As these letters are extremely brief and to the point, multiple revisions work well with less exposure to them. Since the internship is drawing to close, it was vital that I sit down and make sense of my media kit project. I had many ideas, notes, and examples, but now it was time to put it all into perspective. With only 2 days left of work, it was time to wrap it all up.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 12TH
Another week gone by too quickly. Although this internship has been amazing, it will be refreshing to get back to school and back into the grind. But that time will come soon enough – back to the internship. My last Friday. Sigh. Just what will I do. Hmmm.. well there is actually plenty to do; so much to wrap up! First things first, I dove right back into the media kit project: typing up the copy, searching for print examples, drafting my own sketches; the madness continues. I took a break from that to put the final touches on the Internship letters and fill in the blanks on the College/University spreadsheet (again, with Excel). I printed them out, hit save, and e-mailed them off into cyber space. Done. Well, not quite. The Operations Manager approached me for a small “telephone marketing” (as I prefer to call it) project for Berks County Living (a sister publication). From a list, I needed to contact current members of the Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce and ask if they were still interested in receiving their complementary issue of BCL. Over 70 phone calls, 20 confirmations, and 50 unanswered – telemarketing is not my favorite. These phone calls took quite the amount of time and before I knew it, like usual, it was 4:30 p.m.
MONDAY, AUGUST 15TH
Wow… it’s really the end of the road here; the last day to tie up the loose ends. Sometime after 2:00 p.m. I was to meet up with Pam to present my media kit suggestions and ideas. I spent most of the late morning and early afternoon prepping everything. I took a break to complete one last project for Meghan: compile an email list from Magazine Manager for the Bridal E-blast. Seemed easy at the time, but as I went, I found myself searching the web for more e-mails than were provided. 3:00 p.m. rolled around and I grabbed my media kit and headed to the conference room to sit down and discuss the details with Pam. I think she really loved the ideas and I’ll really find out come Fall when the new media kit comes out! With only an hour left of work, I continued with the Bridal contact list but was unable to finish it in time. It was the first real night of taking home some work to do. With much success, I was finished by 8:30 p.m. with the internship work now completely behind me. What a strange feeling to have finished the internship from my desk at home.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 18TH
Here I am, sitting at the large table in the middle of the Style Office, writing my last entry for my Internship. Twenty-five days, spanning three months. Wow. What an amazing internship; doesn’t even feel like I was working – not just because it was unpaid, but because it was such a rewarding experience. I came in today at my usual time, 11:30 a.m., but on an unusual day of Thursday. We traveled down to Easton to Sette Luna for the intern farewell lunch (which we found out not all interns get to enjoy, lucky us!). The food was fantastic, as was the company – this was a group of ladies I will often miss, but never forget. For some of the more sweet savvy, we headed over to The Purple Cow for some ice cream before making our way back to the office. But all too quickly… it’s over. I’m here at the table, typing, not really wanting to leave, but really I should. I’ve never just had a job for three months and left, especially a place that I’ve loved working at and enjoyed. As I’m lingering, Meghan asks me to edit a few more sections of the October issue for her and I slowly do so. Enough is enough though…. I just need to bite the bullet and say farewell – how hard could it be? I sit down at Pam’s desk one more time and say, “Well, I guess that’s it?!” How sad and dramatic does this sound!? As I write this, it plays over in my head with weepy music playing softly in the background (I guess I have a flair for writing today). All the girls come out to say goodbye. I hug Pam, then Denise. Lisa. Caley and Meghan. Truly wonderful people. I now know that the magazine industry is somewhere that I really could see myself working and I’m glad to know that this experience has shaped the way I approach such work. Lehigh Valley Style has been incredible; I’ll leave it at that.
